ABOUT THE AUTHORJoan Burkhart Whitely moved to Las Vegas in 1985 to take a job as a reporter for The Nevadan, a Sunday magazine published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Two of the magazine's missions were to profile interesting Las Vegans and to publicize the colorful history of the region. Writing and editing stories about these overlapping subjects gave Whitely experience in historical research and an understanding of the many motives and events which brought families to build their lives at an outpost in the country's driest desert. Currently Whitely is a writer in the Review-Journal's features department, where she has won awards in the prestigious Best of the West competition and Nevada State Press Association Better Newspapers contest. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1954, Whitely earned a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1982. She lives in Las Vegas with her husband, Robert, and sons Haven and Adam. |
